The word chanbara (チャンバラ) in Japanese literature means sword fight. Chanbara is an abbreviated form of chanchan barabara: the first half is mimesis for the sound of swords clashing.

Outline of Association
The theme of the pamphlet was The techniques developed essentially from self-defense. The disciples were reared. And after two years, in 1973 the All Japan Goshindo Federation was inaugurated. Small scale competitions were held and informative activities were carried out. Now, the number of playing members has reached three hundred thousand, officially recognized instructors are about four thousand. Sports Chanbara is being coached from Hokkaido to Kokinawa. Each association in various areas is becoming increasingly competent and holding their own competitions.

It was the beginning that Mr.Tanabe noticed not the restricted sports but the Chanbara Playing holding sticks and running about the precincts of shrines and the fields, mountains wildly and freely. He developed new tools and rules, And then Sports Chanbara became a modern sport. By doing this he placed Sports Chanbara on the stage of Sports World as a modern Chanbara Playing conducted on a safe and fair basis in gymnasiums. The weapons are soft sticks named air soft swords. Contents in that is air existing all over the world. With the introduction of these weapons people all over the world are now able to play on common ground. Before the invention of air soft weapons players could not compete on a fair basis with the earlier sponge swords varying in consistency and material in the various countries and districts.

There are various different ways to play Sports Chanbara.
For example: Taisen is the way of fighting one on one
Ransen puts a group of players against another group that comprise of a different number of players, such as a few players against one
Kassen (team-match) is the fighting which the two teams are the same in number such as thirty against thirty or fifty against fifty, this form was called Ikusa, a common way of fighting in old days.

In the case of a difference in the ability level and physique of players such as the case of adults against juveniles, playing can be conducted with the unequal length Emono(swords).
For example, in the case of Kodachi(60cm) against Choken(100cm) with handicaps, the difference is overcome.
To take the extreme in the case of a battle between the World Champion and three or four children with Choken, the children are sometimes victorious.

Running about gymnasiums, grounds, fields and hills with playmates in Kassen and Ransen (team match) shy and weak children (izimerarekko) can have enough exercise and get rid of everyday stress in a single stroke.
Through Sports Chanbara we are able to make friends with foreigners, breaking the language barriers between them and us using the "air-soft" sword. Spochan Playing like "Balloon Breaking Game" (the game of breaking a balloon placed on the head protector) is useful to help mutual affinity between teachers and pupils, parents and children. And so Spochan Playing can create friendship.

Events for the handicapped are held in many places and give them rehabilitation's training and the chance to have communication with those not handicapped. We are promoting Sports Chanbara so that instructors and players in various situations may make good use of Spochan according to each one's situation.
And we are promoting Sports Chanbara so that all the people may enjoy themselves naturally in a very relaxed atmosphere disregarding the differences in physique and age of young and old, men and women.
Abilities in spirit and physical strength of Spochan extend to the various aspects and we are sure that the fighting spirit can be developed naturally in a very relaxed atmosphere disregarding the differences in the ability level and physique.

Swords
Kodachi (小太刀) (Under 60 cm)

The kodachi is such a popular division of sports chanbara they even say "you start sports chanbara from the kodachi", kodachi is about the size of a wooden stick or truncheon which can be practical, female players are particularly in favour of this division.

Choken(長剣) ( Under 100 cm)

The choken was at first played either with a single hand or with two hands. As players furthered their experience in competitions, however, many of them turned out to adopt the single-hand handling. In other words the two -hand handling, exemplified by kendo.

Nito(二刀)
The nito is two-hand style, however, taken roots among the Japanese, and is irresistibly attractive to them. The Japanese kendo style falls short of defense capacity so that if he attacks straight towards his opponent, he may inevitably be struck as well.

Tanto(短剣) (under 45cm)

The tanto is actually a dagger, therefore a player using tanto will try to stab his opponent, also in a tanto match, you can use your hands to stop your opponent's. Kicking is also allowed, but you can't score with a kick.

Long weapons
Jo (杖)
(140 cm)

A short staff also used in aikido and jodo/jojutsu, this weapon is very versatile when mastered and properly used. Both ends can be used.

Bou(棒) (200 cm)

Once accustomed, a player can exert a variety of exciting techniques with a bo. It shows its strength in fighting against the choken or the nito-ryu. It does not, however, work well against something like the yari. It sometimes displays unexpected movements such as sayuu-chi, which uses both ends of a bo one after the other, kaiten (spin and strike), yokomen-uchi, or ashiuchi.
There are two kinds of jo. One is a short version of bo and the other is the choken with a long grip. In addition, other various swords like three piece rod, chigirigi, nunchaku, kusarigama and Tonfa are all included in this division.

Yari(槍) (200 cm)

It is really meaningful to explore the yari as a sports. With the exception of missiles, no other swords have achieved such an exclusive performance as the yari has done. Characterrized by its simple, direct power, it used to contribute to battles to a great extent in old times. Nowadays, you can still find in traditional houses a kakeyari on nageshi, which explains samurai's prosper-ous past. The yari was so much familiar to people of that time.
If swordsmanship is three times as advantageous as unarmed combat, spearmanship could then be three times as advantageous as swordsmanship is. Despite its excel-lency, the art of yari only remains in some old martial arts, and otherwise does not attract attention. Taking care of the yari as a sports would be part of our reponsi-bility, which we have so far failed to do. In the Olympic Games, one can only find it used in Javelin. In Japan, it would be more familiar for us to hold it with two hands.

Naginata (なぎなた, 薙刀) The naginata is a polearm with a long blade. While the yari is used mainly in thrusting attacks, the naginata can be used to perform slashing as well as thrusting attacks. The sports chanbara version of the naginata has the same overall length as the yari, but has a longer "blade" portion.
